Then the tempter approached him and said, “If you are the Son of God,[a] command these stones to be transformed into loaves of bread.” Jesus answered, “As it is written:

‘Man does not live by bread alone,
    but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.’ ”[b]

Next the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the summit of the temple.[c]
